Every person has psychological health, so psychological health and safety should be important for every company that employs humans. We have extensive experience in working with companies in heavy industry such as oil and gas, mining and manufacturing, however, our clients range across many industries. The common factor among all our clients is a progressive mindset that recognize employees are valuable assets. When genuinely cared for and invested in, employees not only thrive personally, but also professionally.
It’s important to recognize that psychological health and psychological safety are different. Both are important components of any comprehensive program. Examples of psychological health aspects include: ensuring that there are adequate psychological supports for employees and their families, providing education and decreasing workplace stigma around mental health. Psychologically safe workplaces actively work to identify, then mitigate or eliminate risk of psychological injury. This is done by training leadership, workplace surveys and focus groups to help identify psychological safety risks and ensuring that policies are in place to help protect employees. Like a physical safety program, a sustaining psychological health and safety program must grow, evolve and integrate into culture over time, while always striving for improvement and progression. While one-off trainings are valuable, programs ensure lasting knowledge transfer and lasting changes in company culture.
The results we’ve seen are significant and have been both quantifiable and anecdotal. We have seen measurable improvements in employee’s perception of the company they work for, supervisors feeling better equipped to manage employees who may be struggling and improved safety metrics, including a decrease in workplace injuries. Anecdotal results include many accounts of how people have felt empowered to ask for help for themselves, improving both their home and work life, or better support a loved one. Leadership teams have articulated that they feel better support by one another resulting in more productive and enjoyable work. Supervisors have reported adapting their leadership style as a result of program training and coaching. This has resulted in improved morale and increased production on their teams.
The answer is yes! We work with companies in North America and beyond. Providing value and offering flexibility is what we do. The topic of mental or psychological health is still widely stigmatized. Because of this, we find that doing our work in-person typically has the biggest impact. In-person focus groups, meetings or trainings give us the best sense of how the information is being received, allowing us to customize components to maximize impact and comprehension. While this is ideal, we know that logistics can be challenging. If virtual services make sense, we are more than willing to work together with you to provide a high value, effective product.
